Getting Started with Dentures

Dentures can be a real saving grace for anyone with damaged or missing teeth. They can restore your natural-looking smile and your confidence along with it. If you’re thinking of getting dentures or have just had them fitted, here are a few tips to get you started.

Get your dentist’s advice

Maybe your dentist has recommended dentures for you or maybe you decided on your own that they are a good idea. Either way, your dentist will be able to advise you on the best course of action and the best type of dentures for you. You can get full dentures, partial dentures, or dental implants depending on the condition of your mouth and how many missing or damaged teeth you have.

If you haven’t already spoken to your dentist about getting dentures, then book a check-up with them as soon as you can. They will be able to answer any questions you have about dentures.

Getting dentures fitted

To make them as comfortable and natural-looking as possible, dentures are made to fit your mouth specifically. A dentist will need to take measurements and impressions of your mouth, gums, and any remaining teeth in order to mold your dentures properly. Depending on the type of dentures you are getting, you may receive these immediately or after a couple of weeks.

In the initial period of getting your dentures, you may need to visit your dentist regularly in order to assess the fit and get any necessary adjustments or realignments.

Adjusting to new dentures

Wearing dentures may feel weird at first, but you will get used to it over time. Your dentist can give you tips on how to eat and speak with your dentures in as well as how to care for them. Here are a few basic tips for adjusting to your dentures:

  • Keep them in – If you’re constantly taking your dentures out, then it will take a lot longer to get used to them. For the first few days at least, make sure you only take your dentures out when necessary (for cleaning, at night, etc.) so that you can get used to them being in your mouth.
  • Facial exercises – Your facial muscles around your jaw and cheeks help to keep your dentures in place, but they won’t be used to this to start with. Practicing keeping your dentures in place and generally exercising your cheek and facial muscles will help to strengthen them and make them more adept at holding your dentures.
  • Practice speaking – Speaking with dentures in can be difficult at first. If you’re self-conscious about speaking to people with your dentures in, then practice it at home by yourself or in front of people you feel comfortable with. Speaking and singing will help you to get used to talking with your dentures in.
