We’ve looked in previous blogs at how Invisalign is a good alternative solution to braces, but what exactly is the difference between the two and how do you know which one is right for you? That’s what this blog is here to clear up, exploring the differences and the pros and cons of both braces and Invisalign.
Braces
Traditional braces are ones that you’ve probably seen lots of times before, with brackets and metal wires attached to the teeth of the patient. Over time and with adjustments, these braces move the teeth into new positions to create a more symmetrical smile, filling gaps or correcting overlap, for example.
Invisalign
Invisalign can be used to treat many of the same problems as traditional braces, but it uses a clear, plastic aligner which fits around the teeth. This is removable but should be worn for around 22 hours per day and needs to be removed before eating or before drinking sugary drinks.
Which is the best?
Let’s look at various factors you will need to consider when choosing between braces and Invisalign, and assess which one comes out on top for each:
Cost – The cost of orthodontal treatment can vary a great deal depending on the individual case, so it is hard to say which one will cost you more. Colgate puts Invisalign in the range of $3,500 – $8,000 and traditional braces at $2,500 – $6,000.
Aesthetics – The main reason people choose Invisalign over braces is because their clear plastic composition makes them practically invisible. This reduces any self-consciousness that patients might feel when wearing braces.
Comfort – The discreetness of Invisalign braces can also make them more comfortable than traditional braces. The wires and brackets of traditional braces can cause abrasions against the cheek and gums, for example.
Limitations – Traditional braces are much more effective at treating serious cases, so Invisalign will not always be a viable alternative to braces depending on the severity of your condition.
Convenience – Your Invisalign trays are removable, which can be seen as a more convenient option. However, this gives you more to think about than with traditional braces as you need to think about when to remove them and when to keep them in. Dental appointments are also more frequent with Invisalign as you need to replace the trays every two weeks.
Time – The amount of time needed for treatment will vary from one person to the next, but, generally speaking, Invisalign usually requires less time than traditional braces. However, this may be partly due to the fact that it is not usually suitable for more serious orthodontal conditions.
